Hyundai entered motorsports in the F2 class of the World Rally Championship in 1998 and 1999. In September / September 1999, the company revealed Hyundai Accent WRC, and the world championship cars on the basis of the Hyundai Accent. Hyundai Team World Rally Championship for the first time in a car in the Rally of Sweden in 2000 and achieved the best score in the top ten that year in the Rally Argentina, when Alistair McRae and Kenneth Eriksson finished seventh and eighth respectively. Eriksson was driving the car at a later date to the fifth place in New Zealand and the fourth in Australia. In 2001, Hyundai debuted in the new development of the Accent WRC, which is designed to improve reliability, but the performance of the car is still not good enough to challenge the big four teams (Ford World Rally Team Mitsubishi, Peugeot and Subaru). However, at the end of the rally season, the team achieved the best result with McRae finished fourth and sixth place Eriksson.
In the 2002 season, he hired a Hyundai Juha Kankkunen four times for the title of world champion, along with Freddie Loa and Armin Schwarz. Kankkunen in fifth place in the New Zealand team was the best result, but were able to outperform the Skoda and Mitsubishi by one point in the battle for fourth place in the constructors' world championship. In September / September 2003, after a season hampered by budgetary constraints, Hyundai announced withdrawal from the WRC, but plans to return in 2006, and this has never happened.
